The Hottest Stylist I Know {April Ray}

April is one hot mama, and I think you’ll agree! This was a really fun relaxed shoot and I am so excited about what it resulted in! I especially love the ones with the blue background. It’s actually an old beat up truck that stopped to haul away some trash. I know what you’re thinking. I take my clients to the classiest places! I know, but how cool are these images?

April has a really cool and funky hair salon in Montrose, CA. It’s called April Ray Salon. As you know I have really curly hair and have had many a bad poodle cut in my day, so when I found April I was overjoyed. If any of you need a great new hair style, or gentle color that lasts and isn’t full of amonia, then April is your gal!

Thanks for letting me take some amazing headshots of you, April, and I can’t wait for my next style!

Ali - Cool. I see a dog paw tattoo! Eh hem...July 26, 2010 - 8:22 pm

Nicola Borland - April, I am so glad that you love them. I am glad they are better than the plain white background you had before! They are definitely not boring!July 22, 2010 - 12:34 pm

April Ray - Wow Nicola! I look so much better through your eyes/camera. You truly captured my artistic side. So much better than that boring white background used by the other guy that did my head shots a few years ago. He made me look so stiff and lifeless. What an improvement! You exceeded my expectations by a long shot. I am so excited to use these pictures to promote my business. Thank you so much!July 22, 2010 - 12:11 pm

Brett - What great fun these are. Light and airy!July 21, 2010 - 8:38 pm

A Hot English Wedding {Vicky and John’s Nuptuals}

Wow…this was a really hard one for me. Not in a bad way, but a good way! You may remember Vicky and John from their cool engagement session around Newcastle. They are friends of mine that go way back, and I was honored to be able to shoot their wedding. The only problem was that Vicky is so gorgeous, and the wedding so well thought out, and with such detail that there are just too many images to choose from!

The day started with a trip to the salon for all the ladies, and then they got themselves presentable at a local hotel in Newcastle. The ceremony and reception were held at a beautiful place called The Alnwick Garden, in Alnwick. It was the first day of summer, and a really hot, perfect one. Their close friends and family were gathered in all their best gladrags to witness the ceremony. I found it difficult to keep shooting and not get caught up in the emotions of the service.

After the service, champagne was served and I managed to drag the family and bridal party away for some formal portraits… and fun ones too. I love the ones in front of Alnwick Castle. It makes them look so regal. The wedding breakfast was served in the most excellent Hansel and Gretal styled Treehouse. This place is like a wooden grotto, with lots of hidden nooks and crannies. It was so cool being under the tree canopy and gave the light a little green hue. During the breakfast her father gave a very heartfelt speech, that almost had me in tears, again.

The party bus moved back to Newcastle for the dancing portion of the evening. The Biscuit Factory is an art gallery, cafe, shop and generally cool place to be. John had a friends band play some funky music and everyone got to hang out and enjoy the love of John and Vicky. I had a great time hanging out with all our mutual friends, tasting the cake and of course lets not forget the most amazing and giant sticky toffee pudding I have ever seen. Mmm mmm mmm. I love all these images and am so happy for them both, as well as being super jealous of their honeymoon trip to Italy. I hope you both had a great time and thank you for letting me share in your day!

The New Arrivals {Kantor Family Portrait}

This family were the lucky winners of a portrait gift certificate from The Little Gym in La Cañada. They are new to the area and what better way to start than with a new family portrait, even including Tex, their 12 year old lab! It was great meeting this family and chatting with them, especially Dad Jonathan, whom is also a photographer. He does some amazing product and beauty photography. Check him out at jonathankantor.com. I am looking forward to getting to know this family better and showing them some cool hot spots in their new neighborhood!

Mommy and Her Muscle Man {Natalie, Wyatt and Baby Zane}

Even though she is due in only 22 days, Natalie still decided there was time enough before the big day to capture some special moments, with Baby Zane still in her belly and Big Brother Wyatt by her side. They both came to my home studio in Pasadena last week for our session. Wyatt was a little shy at first, but after some funny face pulling we were getting along fine and Wyatt was a testament to his parents love.  He was so well behaved and he listened to my direction so well I was amazed.

Wyatt has such a sweet smile and I know he will make a great big brother in a few weeks.  I am very happy for Natalie and Michael as well and look forward to meeting Baby Zane soon!

Natalie Crosby - Thank you Nicola for inviting us to your beautiful home studio. We had a great time and you made this experience very relaxing and enjoyable for a very prego mama. Wow, I'm so swollen in these pictures, but you were able to get some awesome buddha belly pictures. Thank you Nicola.July 5, 2010 - 10:25 am

Puppy Dog Tails {Tyler the Black Boxer}

Tyler is the cutest little black Boxer puppy you have seen.  He has all the things a puppy should have, energy, tenacity, big paws and sharp little baby teeth!  I had great fun chasing him around my front garden and catching him in the middle of all his mischief.  I look forward to watching him grow into a beautiful, and hopefully well behaved dog!

Ali - Hey, you stealing my clients?!? J/K Very cute :)July 6, 2010 - 3:43 pm

Laurel - Oh my, he is quite the handsome little dude!!! I have 2 boxers and they are the best!! Great pics!July 5, 2010 - 6:19 am

Nicola Borland - Aww thanks April. I loved shooting little Tyler. It is so sad that they grow so quickly. But they give so much love, so its worth it!July 2, 2010 - 1:56 pm

April Ray - Wow Nicola! The Photo's of my little Tyler dog came out Great! It was so much fun to see you work with him. It's hard to decide which one is my favorite. I am so glad we decided to get some puppy pictures because he is growing out of that puppy stage really quickly. I am always recommending you to the Moms I know (of both human and the furry type, lol!). You really are the best at capturing the moment! :) Thanks Again! AprilJuly 2, 2010 - 1:47 pm

Playing With Seaweed {An English Family Portrait}

Hannah and I have know each other for about 10 years.  I know I can’t believe it either!  Whenever I go to Newcastle to visit my old friends there, I get to impose on Hannah, and Play, and stay with her.  It’s like going to a fully stocked mini hotel.  I get all the snacks and drinks that I need, a room to myself, a comfy sofa with all the TV channels, yummy vegetarian meals cooked to order, and the best part is, I get to hang out with the coolest person and a best friend.  We go out dancing and have a great time, but I love just hanging out and watching TV with her, chatting about old times, and how cool the guy is that worked at Kathmandu.

When she asked if I could take some family portraits for her I was delighted.  Her parents drove up from York and we all went down to the beach.  It had been nice and sunny in the morning, but of course as soon as we got there it clouded over and got a bit blustery.  But being the no complaining about the weather Brits that we are we soldiered on, and had a great time.  Dad, Ian, was finding strings of seaweed as tall as Hannah and having a little munch on them, as you do, while the rest of us were trying to staying warm.  I had a great time shooting their portrait and miss them dearly already.

I have your room ready for you here when you make it across the Atlantic and there will be a bowl of soup waiting, not stew, but soup.

Ian Richardson - You cleaver cleaver creature. The photographs of the family are wonderful and it was a real pleasure to be photographed by you. Heather usually hates having her photograph taken but under your care you was so relaxed that she ends up looking like herself and not eyes closed and grimacing. Thank you so much Ian RichardsonJune 14, 2010 - 1:35 pm

A Trip Down Memory Lane

So here I am in the Mother Country!  Beautiful Scotland!  It was the longest trip to get here with both flights being delayed due to mechanical problems, never encouraging!  And a long wait in Edinburgh to get my suitcase.  Although that was not too bad as my nephew made the trip out to the airport, so he was entertaining us all while we waited.

In my business and line of work I am always talking about memories.  Making them, capturing them and just having them in general.  I always try and tell my clients how important it is to have photography and a good professional photographer in your life.  I sometimes feel like a broken record saying the same things to everyone and it can feel a little cheesy at times.  The phrases “Memories that will last a Lifetime” and “For Generations to Come” seem to come out of my mouth on a daily basis!

It is not until I come back home and visit with my family and old friends that it really hits me.  Its true, the memories do last a lifetime and for generations to come.  I just had a look through a photo album that my grandmother, known as Babí to the family, made of my sister and I as kids and some trips she took with my Granddad, known as Dêda (d-yeda).  It was so cool to look at that album and see what images she loved and wanted to keep, what was important to her, and to just remember her.  Her smile, her style, her grace, adventurous spirit and green thumb.

Babí had the best green thumb!  One photograph was of Babí and myself standing in her veggie garden and it brought back some of my favorite memories of having Sunday lunch on the tiny patch of grass surrounded by the bounty of all her hard work.  There were potatoes, strawberries, gooseberries, chives, poppies, carrots and so much more.  We would have whatever cold foods and goodies we could pack into containers, and enjoy the weather while Babí watered and looked after her plants.  Dêda would have to cut the grass with the hand mower, but there was always hay fever and a bad back to contend with, and of course, once the back goes, well that’s it gone!

I talked with my mother and sister about it and we all smiled and laughed and paused for a second to remember the scene in our heads.  Yes, the memory could have come up of its own accord, but that picture was the starting point for me for that one memory.  Then all the other ones come rolling out of the woodwork and before you know it you are on the floor laughing at something obscure that happened 20 years ago in a distant land, but is still funny today.

What makes us people?  Is it the houses we live in, the jobs we have, and the places we are going? Or is it the places we have been and what we have learned from them?  Sure I like to look forward.  To look ahead to the future, keep moving on and learning and growing.  But what we have done in the past, places we have been, and people we have met are what I think truly shapes us.  We learn from the past, the good things and the bad things.  The happy memories and the sad memories.  Our lives are no longer quite with little distraction, but loud and quite frankly all over the place.  Meetings, classes, phones, work, computers, obligations, kids, pets, the gym and so many other things fill our lives.  We forget the people that make up our lives.  I forget the people in my life.  I forget people that I haven’t seen in a few years.  Does that mean I hold their teachings any differently?  No.  It just means I am looking ahead a little too much and need to slow down and look back.  To sit with a photo album and remember.  To read a diary, or an old birthday card sentiment, and laugh.

To look at my old photos at home brings back so much I feel like I want to bring them all back to California with me!  To hold them close and never forget.  To show people why I love photography so much.  That before I was even able to hold a camera, photos were already a huge part of my life.  To try and convey that those baby pictures of myself, and my sister and not just a quick shot that doesn’t mean anything, but something so big and important I may never be able to convey what it really means to me.  To show my clients that when I say that the images I capture will be “memories to last a lifetime”, and the images will be here “for generations to come”, that its true.  There kids will hold them close, and their grand kids and great grand kids.  They will look at them as I do mine, and wonder do I have her nose, her eyes or her style.  And of course the one that most of us are heard saying as we look as childhood photographs, “What on earth was I wearing!”

So next time you are about to snap a quick shot with your point and shoot or hire a photographer to do a family portrait, remember that it is not just a picture, but actually a memory that you will cherish, and your kids, friends and family will love even after you are gone, as I do with Babí’s pictures from so long ago.

Ilona - Awe, nice narrative Nic. Haste ye back to the wet, wild and windy bonny Scotland. I & C xJune 9, 2010 - 5:15 am

Ali - Word!May 31, 2010 - 2:24 pm

Shaun M. - Photographs are like diamonds that are so valuable and precious. Bringing memories is one the foremost advantage of keeping photos. It also unites our family as it touches our feelings of love for them and brings out the connection that bonds each and every member of the family.May 20, 2010 - 7:33 pm

The Making of a New Little Man {Antonio Gael’s Baptism}

I have been lucky enough to take images of Antonio from 7 days old and was so happy to be a part of this milestone in his life.  All his family were gathered on this special day to see him become a part of their faith.  Antonio was not quite aware of the importance of the situation as he was laughing and giggling throughout the service at St John Eudes Catholic Church in Chatsworth.  He did really well with the poring of the Holy Water on his head, as did his Godparents, Hector and Ester.

After the service we all went back to his new Godparents house for some family time.  Antonio had a great time with his big cousins on the bouncy castle.  I think he liked the colors and the not being on solid ground part.  All the friends and family that were there loved seeing him in his little white suit and with the coolest little white chucks as well.  I am loving being a friend of Antonio and being there for all his big days.  Next big, 1 year old!!!

The Three Little Lovelies {Hudson, Channing and Keeten}

These are the last little ones of my Mother’s Day specials to come to my home studio. Hudson is a great big brother, listens well and holds his little brother just right. Channing is a cheeky little one that loves, loves, loves getting tickled, and Keeten, is the little brother with the big blue eyes. I had great fun with these three. Especially holding Keeten as the end of our session while mum got the other two ready to go. His little legs are so cute and chubby!

Ali - Love the one where... ...the girl is in the foreground with the boys in the back. ...close up on the boy's face while making that funny face. ...the older kids kissing the baby. ...the two expressions on the baby's face in the last photos. Awesome.May 7, 2010 - 8:45 am
